vSphere Metro Storage Cluster คืออะไร

VMware รองรับการทำ Stretched Cluster (บางครั้งเรียกว่า Split Cluster) คือการทำ cluster ระหว่าง ESX/ESXi ที่อยู่ต่าง site กันได้
โดยมากมักจะอยู่ห่างกันมากเพื่อรองรับการทำ Disaster Recovery และมักจะมีจุดประสงค์เพื่อทำ "Active/Active" data centers

การทำ Stretched Cluster ไม่จำเป็นต้องทำเพื่อ HA/DRS หรือแม้กระทั่ง VMotion แต่ถ้าระบบเราเป็น vmware อยู่แล้ว เราก็สามารถใช้ประโยชน์ของ Stretched Cluster เพื่อทำ HA/DRS/VMotion ข้ามระหว่าง Data Centers ได้

Stretched Cluster มีข้อที่ต้องคำนึงถึงดังนี้
1. Network : ต้องมี Layer 2 Tunnel ระหว่าง data centers ซึ่งปัจจุบันจะมีเทคโนโลยีอย่าง Cisco OTV, LISP ที่สามารถทำได้
2. Storage : ต้องสามารถ read/write storage ได้พร้อมกันทั้ง 2 data centers มีสองแนวทางคือ stretched SAN หรือ distributed virtual storage

สำหรับในส่วนของ Storage ปัจจุบัน EMC VPLEX เป็นคนแรกที่ออก compatibility กับ VMware HCL : FC Metro Clustered Storage ครับ
